Unfortunately 2019 is to be the final year for the Lake District Pound

03 Apr 2019

Launching the 2019 LD£ with a very special guest!

“I am absolutely over the moon, it’s a fantastic honour. I never thought I would have my face on a pound note and what better place to have it than on a Lake District Pound? It’s wonderful. The businesses that help everyone in the Lake District need all the help they can get. It’s tough times and therefore I am very proud to be able to give a little bit of help.” - Sir Chris Bonington

Daffodils are blooming, birds are singing and it feels distinctly like spring!

What better time to visit the Lake District and use your LD£ to explore and support some of our fantastic local businesses! And don’t forget to pick up your Lake District Pound passport as well and collect unique stamps and win prizes.

We’re so excited that we organised a special event to see in the spring and hear a bit more about all the great Lake District characters who appear on the 2019 LD£.

Guest of honour was mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington, who appears on the LD£10.

He joined other experts at the University of Cumbria in Ambleside to talk all about his love of the Lakes.

“I am absolutely over the moon, it’s a fantastic honour,” said Sir Chris.

Thanks so much, Sir Chris! It’s an honour to have you!

It was also great to hear about the life and work of Charlotte Mason, the hero of the LD£1, from Doctor Chris Loynes from the university, and learn more about the scientific drawings of Beatrix Potter - who appears on the LD£5 - from Trudy Lindsay and Janet Edwards from the Beatrix Potter Society. Elaine Taylor from National Trust property Allan Bank, in Grasmere, also gave a very interesting talk about its former owner Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, who appears on the LD£20.

Thanks so much to everyone for making it such a wonderful evening!
