LD£5 – The 2018 design stories

"Alfred Wainwright opened his eyes and mind to the intricacies of 214 Lakeland fells…and crafted a page every evening in his own meticulous yet very personal style.

"Wainwright’s own ‘labour of love’ as he called it, has not only opened up our eyes to the amazing Lakeland fells, but also inspired thousands of people to embark on their own creative journey in the Lake District."

Take a closer look at your 2018 LD£5 and discover the theme and stories that inspired our design. And remember, every LD£ you collect as a keepsake or souvenir helps us fund local projects that keep the Lake District special!

Our Creative Director, Sophie, explains the theme and ideas that brought our first LD£5 note to life.

The theme of the LD£5 is ‘Creativity & Freedom’. We wanted to celebrate the way the Lake District, as somewhere we are all free to explore and enjoy, can fire up our imagination and also inspire creativity in endless forms – from food to photography!

The Lake District became a National Park in 1951. It sounds official but what this really means is that these beautiful landscapes are here for everyone to enjoy. This was one of the reasons Alfred Wainwright began his 13-year journey of creativity and freedom as he created his world-famous Pictorial Guides.

He opened his eyes and mind to the intricacies of 214 Lakeland fells…and crafted a page every evening in his own meticulous yet very personal style.  Wainwright’s own ‘labour of love’ as he called it, has not only opened up our eyes to the amazing Lakeland fells, but also inspired thousands of people to embark on their own creative journey in the Lake District. That’s why we featured a photographer as part of the scene – just one of the ways you enjoy exploring the Lake District today.

In the background, you’ll also see a footpath leading towards Innominate Tarn…a place that was special to Wainwright, and where he asked for his ashes to be scattered.

On the other side of your LD£5, see if you can recognise this iconic view from Keswick, over Derwentwater, towards the mighty Skiddaw and neighbouring fells. Look closely to imagine how this landscape has inspired millions of creative adventures – many fuelled by the humble pencil, made using graphite from the Borrowdale Valley since the 16th century!

You might also recognise the subtle line drawing, which creates an aerial view of Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake, which sits right next to Crow Park – where one of the most fabulous views over Derwentwater can be enjoyed.

We hope you love your LD£5 as much as we do! There are so many stories to discover, and you can find out even more in our 2018 LD£ Storybook – a beautifully printed book telling the stories behind our designs and including exclusive features from local designers and poets.

Every LD£ you collect helps us fund local projects that keep the Lake District special. Order your LD£ Collector Set, Currency Set or LD£ Storybook online today.
