The New 2019 Lake District Pounds Revealed!
"For 2019, in this new set of notes, we wanted to delight people with a new and exciting style, and so chose to work with the very talented, up-and-coming local artist Rebecca Gill, whose bold and colourful portraits give an amazing vibrancy to the notes and the characters featured on them."
We are very happy to be able to begin 2019 by revealing the brand new designs for this year's Lake District Pounds!
It was a tough task, but also a real privilege, to take on the challenge of telling the story of the Lake District's culture and history on the 2019 Lake District Pounds. We hope you have fun collecting, swapping and spending your LD£!
- The LD£1 is based around ‘Fun and Adventure’, featuring pioneering Victorian educator Charlotte Mason. Charlotte Mason established her House of Education in Ambleside in 1892 and it is still part of the University of Cumbria campus on site. The LD£1 also features a view across the Fairfield Horseshoe near Ambleside.
- The LD£5 celebrates ‘Creativity and Freedom’, featuring Rebecca Gill’s artistic portrait of children’s author Beatrix Potter and a view across Buttermere in the Western Lake District.
- The LD£10 celebrates ‘Resilience and Determination’, embodied in a portrait of mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington and featuring the view across Ullswater to Helvellyn, one of the highest mountains in England.
- The LD£20 represents ‘Love for the Landscape’ and features Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, who lived in the Lake District and was one of the founders of the National Trust as well as a key pioneer in conservation. It also features a view across Coniston Water to the famous Old Man of Coniston.
We'll hand over to our creative director Sophie to say a bit more about the designs!
“With exciting new designs every year, the Lake District Pound is an amazing creative platform not only to celebrate the endless inspiring people and stories associated with the Lake District and Cumbria, but also to showcase the creative talent that exists in our region.
“In 2018, Holly Acland’s wonderful illustrations and watercolours gave our first set of currency a really magical appeal. For 2019, in this new set of notes, we wanted to delight people with a new and exciting style, and so chose to work with the very talented, up-and-coming local artist Rebecca Gill, whose bold and colourful portraits give an amazing vibrancy to the notes and the characters featured on them.
“We knew we would never be able to sum up everything people love about the Lake District in one set of notes. So each year we’ll interpret our four design themes in new ways, with different characters, stories and featured artists. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate what so many people love about the Lake District and Cumbria.
“With the designs changing every year, it’s also important to maintain consistency between years. To ensure this, each denomination has its own colour theme that remains constant from year to year. Additionally, the reverse of each LD£ features a landscape view of lake and mountains that ensures a commonality between years.”
