Laura of Laura in the Lakes
“I started off working at a local business near to where we were living and one day my husband came home and said, ‘I think I’ve found your next 10 year plan’ and this is it: Laura in the Lakes."
“I used to come on family holidays to Ullswater with my family when I was a little girl and I really fell in love with the area then and about 12 years ago, my husband and I made the decision to move our family up here. We just thought a rural upbringing would be fantastic for our children and we’ve loved every minute of being here.
“Happy memories from our childhood played a big part in the decision and I think that’s true for so many people who come up here - it was good to know that we were coming to a beautiful relaxed environment to live, work and grow.

“We make everything fresh every day, we’re renowned for our scones, quiches and pies and good wholesome fresh food, great breakfasts for campers and lunches for walkers and a tasty afternoon tea for people who come down off the fells at the end of the day. We take pride in looking after people and giving them simple food done well.
“We’re a close community in Keswick and everybody’s really friendly and we all help each other in times of need. We love our town and where we live and we want to look after it and share it with the visitors. I think it’s a bit of a hidden gem of the Lake District.
“You can go to any city and see the same shops and the same brands. We’re flying the flag for unique, independent businesses here in Keswick. I think people come here and they think ‘Wow, I didn’t realise there was so much to do here’. There are so many independent businesses, not just in Keswick but in Borrowdale and all around the area that are offering fantastic facilities for families to come and stay and have fun.
“During the floods in 2015 we all pulled together to support each other. We were lucky enough not to get flooded, but we immediately came in and started making teas and coffees and taking hot food and cakes to people who needed it. When the army came to help clean up in the weeks that followed a lot of the cafes and restaurants did our best to feed them.
“When we’re not working we walk whenever we can get the chance. Buttermere is my favourite place. I like to get there really early in the morning, when it’s good and quiet and you can have it to yourself a bit. When we’ve been away and we come back we’re so relieved to get back to the Lakes because it’s so peaceful and restful and such a great place to live.”
