Alex from Keswick Boot Company

"We wanted to get involved with the Lake District Pound because it highlights the fact that we are a local, independent trader. I think it matters to customers to try and support local businesses and hopefully they will do their research and come across it and be more inclined to come here. There are so many fantastic local businesses, we are very lucky to have them, but they are only there if people support them."

“I was originally born in Carlisle and brought up down Borrowdale.

“Growing up in Borrowdale was fantastic, and I suppose as a kid I thought that was what it was like for everybody, but I was incredibly lucky. There are certainly worse places to grow up. My dad was a big fell runner and I used to cycle a lot. We got our dog Chick - she’s 14 now - and we started taking her walking in the fells. I guess it’s something I came to a bit later in life, but now I absolutely love it.

“I worked for other outdoor shops in town before starting the Keswick Boot Company - we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary at the shop this year. I really enjoyed working in the other shops, but I wanted the excitement and the challenge of doing something on my own and I was young enough and daft enough to give it a try and see what happened.

“Having worked in the outdoor sector for a long time, it was my opinion that boots was one area where a lot of shops could have done it better. We sell what we use ourselves, I’m a keen walker - although I’d like to do more - and my wife Kerrie is a keen walker. I am not a runner and I’m not a climber and so I stick with what we’ve got a good knowledge of. You should stick with what you’re good at.

“It’s a technical product we’re selling and it’s expensive and so it’s important that you get it right for the customer. We walk regularly and we try and use the products as much as possible. I get out into the fells at least once a week.

“Keswick is a lovely place, the town is lovely and people are lovely and it’s one of the few places where a shop like ours would actually work because we are so specialist. We’ve deliberately gone for brands that you might not find elsewhere, that are slightly more quirky and technical.

“We’re very lucky that we’ve been so well supported by so many of the other local businesses and by local people as well. Other shops like Rathbones, Needlesports or Fisher’s will send customers to us and we do exactly the same. It’s in everybody’s interest for the customers to have a good experience.

“Local businesses are a real part of the local community. They’re run by local people and they are putting directly back into the local economy. They are employing local people.
